A husband and wife are behind bars facing first-degree murder charges after a botched illegal eviction turned deadly on Monday, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
James Sidney Llanos, 47, and Lizeina Marie Cepeda, 39, were arrested following an investigation into the fatal shooting of 30-year-old Travon Jackson. Both suspects are being held without bond.
Detectives report that the incident occurred on March 9, 2026, at an apartment complex on the 1800 block of Lake Chapman Drive.
According to investigators, Llanos and Cepeda were subletting the unit to Jackson.
The couple allegedly entered the residence on Monday with the intent to forcibly evict Jackson. During the ensuing physical altercation, authorities say Llanos produced a firearm and fatally shot the victim.
“This was a senseless act of violence that cost a man his life,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement Tuesday. “Our detectives worked quickly to piece together what happened and make sure those responsible are held accountable.”
Because the suspects allegedly entered the dwelling to commit a crime, both face “felony murder” charges—a capital offense in Florida when a death occurs during the commission of a specific felony, such as burglary.
James Sidney Llanos has been charged with:
• First-Degree Murder while engaged in burglary.
• Armed Burglary of a Dwelling with assault or battery.
Lizeina Marie Cepeda has been charged with:
• First-Degree Murder while engaged in burglary.
• Burglary of an Occupied Dwelling with assault or battery.
The Sheriff’s Office has not yet released details regarding whether a formal eviction notice had been filed or if previous disputes had been reported at the address. Under Florida law, landlords are strictly prohibited from using “self-help” measures, such as forcible entry or changing locks, to remove tenants without a court order.
The investigation remains active. The Public Affairs Office stated that further updates will be provided as they become available.
